Opened 3 years ago on the Yaesu (east) side of Tokyo Station is the very cool JAPAN RAIL CAFE.

Designed as a coffee shop, JRC is much more than that. It’s also a meeting place, a space designed for ideas, small business gatherings, and as a place to meet new friends and talk.

It’s also an official Certified Tourist Information Center (TIC) sponsored by the JNTO.

Located on the ground floor of the DAIMARU food palace and department store, the cafe is easily accessible just outside the east central exit of Tokyo Station.

We’ve covered this side of the station and its excellent street before in earlier posts.

There’s also an official JNTO Tourist Information Office inside the cafe, and the info office has a desk where you can make travel plans and even buy the Japan Rail Pass (which gives you nearly unlimited access to many of Japan’s trains for several weeks or months).

Facing **south**. The station is center right. The DAIMARU building is right of that, and the Shangri La hotel is on the far **right**. On the left is the Yamada Denki Concept LABi store. The street shown is *Sotobori Dori*. Just down to the left past Yamada are some interesting side streets that are a must-see.

There are endless things to do around (and under) Tokyo Station. Be sure to walk the area and check everything out. Just to the south a few blocks is the Yurakucho area, which also a fabulous place to visit.

One of the cool things to do right across the street is to walk down Sakura Street (Sakura Dori). This tree-lined street comes alive at night and has a host of interesting restaurants, shops, and hotels. If you have time be sure to have a look. To get there, cross the street to the east side, head north on the sidewalk, then make the second right. You can’t miss it.
