Bunkyo (pronounced “Boon-ky-o” ) Ward is an area of Tokyo on the northwest side of the city south of Itabashi and which includes the mixed use Tokyo Dome City complex and Korakuen Station.
Bunkyo Garden is a mixed used complex attached to Korakuen Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line. It opened in 2023.
A few blocks north of Tokyo Dome City is the Bunkyo Civic Center (35°42’28.31″ N 139°45’06.88″ E) which just happens to have a top-floor glass observatory which provides a spectacular view of the entire city.
Also check out Korakuen Gardens right next door.
There are 3 main sub-towns in the Bunkyo area. From north to south they are: Itabashi, Sugamo, Bunkyo.
Just south of Tokyo Dome City is Iidabashi, and south of that, Jimbocho.
All the areas are worth a look and make a nice walking tour, if you’re up for a long walk.

Sugamo Jizo-Dori Shopping Street
One of the best walks in west Tokyo is in Sugamo north of Bunkyo called Sugamo Jizo-Dori Shopping Street. This street is a pleasant stroll along a quiet street lined with quaint shops and nice night-time lighting. At the north end of the street is Itabashi. The best time to go is in the morning when the shops open, or in the late afternoon before sunset.
2 roads lead from Tokyo Dome City to the entrance to Sugamo Jizo-Dori Shopping Street: first Route 301 north (also known as the Nakasendo Highway), then Route 17 to the northwest which branches off 301 to the west. The entrance to Sugamo Jizo-Dori Shopping Street is around 35°44’05.10″ N 139°44’12.24″ E and is about 3 miles north of Bunkyo Civic Center. If you walk the entire distance, including the shopping street all the way to Itabashi and back to Tokyo Dome City, expect to walk about 7-8 miles.
