Japanese Money

Unlike the west, Japan is a cash society. It’s not unusual for people to keep all their cash in safes in their houses.

It’s also not unusual for Japanese to carry around large rolls of bills.

Japan has ¥10,000, ¥50,000, and ¥1000 bills – which are roughly equivalent to $100, $50, and $10 US bills.

There is no ¥500 bill but there is a ¥500 coin – as well as ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5, and ¥1 coins.
