Just 1/4 mile northwest of the legendary Sen so-ji in Asakusa is a cool little cafe called Coffee Shop LAYLA.
Just off the huge and popular Asakusa Hisago Shopping Street, Coffee Shop LAYLA is worth a look if you roaming around Asakusa.
To get here, you’ll need to get near Rt. 462 which runs north-south. The Sumida River is just to the east where the main part of Asakusa is. You can walk across one of two bridges nearby, or you can walk down Rt. 319 then hang a left to head south just before the Rt. 462 intersection.

By train get to Asakusa Station, then head left near the big corner Don Quijote. The cafe is about 3 blocks north. There is also an interesting small amusement park just to the northwest of the shop.
Coffee Shop LAYLA is small, but offers a wide array of coffee, tea, egg sandwiches, snacks, and is also open for breakfast if you’re not looking for a big meal. Inside there’s a slight Victorian vibe, but the shop is spotless, well-lighted, and the staff is friendly. Be aware the shop allows smoking – although in this day and age smoking is increasingly rare in Japan.
A Stroll Down Rt. 462
If you come out of the covered Hisago Shopping Street and south past the cafe, hang a right, then a left, you’ll be at the Rt. 462 (Kokusai-Dori Ave.) intersection. The walk up and down Rt. 462 is quite nice and there’s a lot to see. About 1/3 of a mile down on the right (west) side of the street is the Samurai Ninja Museum (and a Mr. Donut right next to it). The museum is located around 35°42’40.68″ N 139°47’28.85″ E. If you swing around and face east from here you’ll see Tokyo Sky Tree to the west, which is only about a mile’s walk across the Sumida River.
Rt. 462 in fact runs far south until it crosses the Sumida River at Suitengumae. You can also cut right (west) just after Asakusabashi (Asakusa Bridge) about another mile south of the museum to head into Akihabara. You can also walk to Rt. 14 (which becomes Rt. 17) at the same intersection which will take you into the fabulous Otemachi and Nihombashi.
There’s lots to do in the area so be sure to explore around if you visa the cafe.
Enjoy!
