Happy New Year everyone. Sorry we’ve been away for a while – we’ve been busy with other projects.

Just east of Tokyo’s Imperial Palace, and just north of the Kanda River, in a small non-descript marble building is the cool Extinct Media Museum, which opened in 2023.

This hip little place has over 1,500 gadgets from bygone eras – computers, cameras, electronics, an insane array of old flip phones – video recorders from Japan’s electronics heydey, audio devices, you name it.

Stuffed into floor-to-ceiling shelves are every kind of vintage electronics gadget from the past 100+ years – including the legendary original Apple iMac, and a NeXT cube computer.

The $17 admission fee is well worth it, and if you’re in the area pop in to take a look.

Access

The museum is actually just southwest of Akihabara, and just west of Kanda in an area known as Uchikanda. It’s also just north of the fabulous Otemachi area.

The two main roads leading to the museum are Rt. 405 north (Sotobori Dori Ave.), and Rt. 403 north, both of which are just east of the Imperial Palace. Rt. 402 intersects both 405 and 403 and it runs east-west.

If you’re coming from the south, take Rt. 405 north, then once you pass the Kanda River as it bends west, take the next left. The museum is 1/2-way down the block on your right.

There is also a Mitsui Garden Hotel just to the southwest.

Heading north on Sotobori Dori Ave, hang a left at this here side street.

Which Station?

That’s a good question. It depends on which way you’re coming from.

On foot it’s a little bit longer from Otemachi Station than from Kanda Station.

Neither station is very far.

Otemachi Station exits right onto 403 so you can walk about 3 blocks north, then 2 blocks east to get to the museum.

Kanda Sta is much larger and to the northeast of the museum, and is one station south of Akihabara. To reach the museum from Kanda Sta, exit on the west side, head south on the main road that parallels the train tracks, then make a dog-leg right at 405. The side street to the museum is 1 more block south on your right if you’re heading south.

It’s also possible to reach the museum from Kanda Sta on several side streets.

The Uchikanda area is not too far east from Jimbocho and Glitch Coffee (3-4 blocks to the west) which we described on our 2019 trip. Glitch is on another major north-south road (Chiyoda Dori) nearby. If you have some extra time, hoof it over to Jimbocho as it’s a really cool area and worth a visit.

If you’re up for even more walking, next head south from Jimbocho to Rt. 301 which runs in front of the Imperial Palace, then back south into Otemachi. In good weather this entire walk is spectacular.

Enjoy!
